Eskom has long estimated that it kills a couple of hundred people a year through bad air.
 

Independent research suggests the number is in the thousands – and that the company is on track to kill closer to 80 000 people within years, not counting the impact of climate change.
 

But that number is set to rise significantly very soon, when Eskom is explicitly excused from following any of the rules intended to protect water, air, and wildlife.
 

On Monday night, cooperative governance minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma gazetted the first set of regulations under the national state of disaster around electricity.
