South Africa's inflation dropped more than expected in July, falling to within touching distance of the SA Reserve Bank's target level of 4.5%. Paving the way for an interest rate cut in September, annual consumer price inflation sank from 5.1% in June to 4.6% last month.

ActionSA's Nobuhle Mthembu is the new speaker of the Johannesburg council. She replaces Margaret Arnolds, who lost the seat on Friday. Mthembu was up against the DA's Nonhlanhla Sifumba, who received 68 of 248 votes. 

A new survey has revealed that more than 70% of KwaZulu-Natal households are food insecure, with 17.1% facing severe shortages. Zululand district is the hardest hit, with 35% of households experiencing severe food insecurity and high levels of hunger.
