Deputy President Paul Mashatile lives in a sprawling mansion bought for R37 million – but he didn't pay for it. The house is registered in the name of a company whose sole directors are his son and son-in-law. And his son-in-law does business with the state. Here are your top stories for Wednesday,12 July.

The story: Deputy President Paul Mashatile is staying in a R37-million home bought by his son-in-law Nceba Nonkwelo – who has received funding from Gauteng government entities – and his son, Thabiso.   
 

What was said: Mashatile's spokesperson and son said Mashatile had to move to the house because of threats in March 2023 by a former girlfriend shortly after he married another woman. 
 

What we found: This is despite the fact that the purchase of the property was set in motion months before the alleged threats, with Mashatile taking occupation shortly after the registration was finalised at the deeds office, which happened to coincide with the time frame in which the threats were made.  

The story: Johannesburg residents are leaving shelves stripped of bottled water in various retail stores ahead of a planned 58-hour water outage.
 

What we know: The water outage will affect a large part of Johannesburg, including Roodepoort, Randburg, Langlaagte, Southdale, and Soweto.
 

What else: Retailers such as Pick n Pay, Checkers and Spar have seen an increased demand for five-litre bottles of water, while West Pack and Crazy
