Eskom is now directly responsible for dishing out darkness in the City of Ekurhuleni after it claimed the municipality was too lax with implementing load shedding. The power utility said failure to implement load shedding by municipalities impacted the grid, increasing the potential for higher stages of power cuts.

Eight candidates are in the running to become the country's new Public Protector and Kholeka Gcaleka, who is currently acting in the position, is one of them. The ad hoc committee leading the process adopted a shortlist on Wednesday. It will interview the candidates next month.

Eskom has taken over load shedding in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE), saying the municipality failed to implement power cuts.
 

"Eskom has on numerous occasions engaged the municipality regarding its failure to load shed its customers," the utility said in a statement on Wednesday.
 

Eskom had previously taken over some of the role and left the municipality to load shed substations that had "critical loads". It later handed back all load shedding after the municipality asked to assume responsibility again.
