Eskom has suspended its acting head of security, Karen Pillay, while it investigates her role in the awarding of R500 million emergency security contract to Fidelity Services. News24 understands the contract was to probe coal theft at the power utility last year. 

The City of Johannesburg (COJ) has dismissed a senior official who blew the whistle on irregularities and possible corruption to the tune of R8.2 billion following a lengthy disciplinary process. Sarika Lakraj-Naidoo, a former finance director of the Department of Public Safety, says she's been shaken by the decision.  

Derick Hougaard has made a significant step towards recovery after nearly two weeks in a coma, battling respiratory pneumonia at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria. Hougaard's partner, singer Nádine, said the former Springbok flyhalf had opened his eyes and is responding to medical personnel.

According to senior Eskom sources, pressure came from the board to suspend her. She continues to cooperate with a probe into the contract, according to the sources.
