The scoop: A parallel intelligence operation allegedly sought to provide protection and political assistance to former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede ahead of the ANC's 2015 regional conference.
 

The details: The 'assistance' included armoured vehicles, political advice and promotional activities. The expenditure for the operation averaged between R700k and R900k a month from November 2014 to March 2015.
 

How we know: Details of these operations were contained in yet unseen documents given to the Zondo Commission, including an affidavit deposed by a Mr Y, a senior executive at the SSA and a member of the Project Veza investigating team.

The story: Advocate Andrea Johnson has been appointed the new head of the National Prosecuting Authority's Investigating Directorate. Hermione Cronje, the outgoing ID boss, announced her resignation in December last year.
 

Who is she: Johnson, who is currently a senior deputy director in the NPA, played a pivotal role in the prosecutions of former police chief Jackie Selebi and disgraced Paralympian Oscar Pistorius. She has more than 25 years' experience.
 

What was said: "Adv. Andrea Johnson will be expected to lead the Investigating Directorate into the next phase of its work as the people of South Africa look to the criminal justice system to bring those responsible for state capture and corruption to book," said President Ramaphosa.

The news: The Proteas have made an inspiring comeback, beating New Zealand by 198 runs in the second Test at the Hagley Oval on Tuesday. 
 

The result: It was a collective effort from the bowlers, who took charge of the game just before lunch. They bowled out the Black Caps for 227 to keep their unbeaten series streak against New Zealand intact.
 

More details: The win, anchored by excellent tons from Sarel Erwee (108) and Kyle Verreynne (136*), along with Kagiso Rabada's (3/46) fine all-round showing with match figures of 8/106 and his second innings 47 that catalysed the declaration, was a remarkable display of resilience from the Proteas.
