Covid-19: Will SA's third wave be worse than the second wave? We ask the experts

Expert view: Chairperson of the Ministerial Advisory Council (MAC) on Vaccines and National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) director, Professor Barry Schoub, said it was still unclear whether the third wave of infections would be worse than the previous waves.

In quotes: "The one thing we can be optimistic, that it won't be worse, is the residual immunity the population has, that might lessen the severity of a third wave," Schoub told News24.

The context: In a televised address - more than a year after Covid-19 first arrived in South Africa - Ramaphosa said it was only a matter of time before the entire country entered the third wave.

Dirco spends millions on rent for overseas diplomats, while state-owned land stands dormant

The story: A parking bay in Paris, a "very small" and old-fashioned washing machine in Havana, Cuba, and a house with a filthy swimming pool in Angola. These are just some of the assets owned by South African missions abroad.

Why it matters: Due to decaying state-owned properties, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) is forced to spend millions each year on expensive rental properties.

A closer look: Dirco reportedly spends about R575 million per year on leases in countries where it does not own properties, while a litany of state-owned land parcels and properties have been standing vacant for nearly two decades.

State Capture Inquiry: Gigaba says it's insulting for Norma to say his father couldn't afford bills

The latest: The claims made by Norma Mngoma, the estranged wife of former minister Malusi Gigaba, that her father-in-law did not pay for renovations at their home in Mandeni in KwaZulu-Natal, are "very painful".

The context: Testifying on Monday, before the State Capture Inquiry, Gigaba maintained that his parents had renovated their home, and rather than the Guptas.

What we heard: He told the commission that his parents had "worked hard and broke their backs" to build the house.
