Covid-19: NCCC meets to decide on alcohol, curfews and hot spot restrictions

The story: The National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) will meet virtually on Tuesday to consider restrictions on the sale and consumption of alcohol in areas that are deemed hot spots across the country, News24 has confirmed.

What we know: Two reliable sources, close to the discussions, confirmed bars and taverns were first in the firing line, but the meeting was expected to debate whether it would first impose area-specific restrictions instead of countrywide measures.

More details: This discussion would include a proposal to implement a curfew, restrict the maximum number for gatherings and other measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 ahead of the festive period.

Black lawyers' body lashes out at critics of Zondo and his commission

The latest: The Black Lawyers Association has lashed out at critics of the commission of inquiry into state capture chaired by Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.

What was said: BLA president Mashudu Kutama said the "unfounded and malicious" criticisms served to undermine the work of the commission.

In quotes: "The BLA call all law-abiding citizens to support the work of the commission as it seeks to investigate corruption both in the public and private sectors. We salute all men and women who have so far appeared before the commission to assist in its work," said Kutama.

No decision on whether NPA will appeal the Coligny judgment

The story: The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has not yet decided whether or not it will be appealing the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) judgment that acquitted the two men found guilty of murdering 16-year-old Matlhomola Moshoeu in Coligny, the North West.

What we know: NPA spokesperson Henry Mamothame on Monday said it was still studying the judgment to establish why the SCA disagreed with the judgment of the North West High Court, which found Pieter Doorewaard and Phillip Schutte guilty of throwing Mosheou off a moving bakkie.

What happened: The apex court on Friday acquitted Doorewaard and Schutte of a number of charges, including murder, after finding the State had not proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
